Goal-dependent Automaticity in Organizational Decision Models
نویسنده
چکیده
The base line model in scholarly research on decision-making has usually been a rational model where the inherent ideology is value maximization through efficiency and effectiveness. However, other decision models have been needed to explain those organizational choices that do not satisfy the conditions of rationality. In this paper automatic decision making, or automaticity, is argued to be one way in which organizations deviate from the rational decision models. Specifically, the presence of automaticty in four different decision models, the rational model, the bureaucratic model, the decision process model, and the political model is described from a conceptual point of view. The author argues that the rational and bureaucratic models are the ones likely to be characterized by automaticity, while the benefits of automatic behavior are less likely to manifest itself in decision process models and political models.

One of the hallmark assumptions of behavioral models is that individuals and organizations learn and adjust their behavior in response to experience (March and Simon, 1958). In the behavioral theory of the firm, Cyert and March (1963) elaborated the basic behavioral assumption by calling attention to organizational learning. Levitt and March (1988) developed these assumptions into a model of or...

This study tested the idea of habits as a form of goal-directed automatic behavior. Expanding on the idea that habits are mentally represented as associations between goals and actions, it was proposed that goals are capable of activating the habitual action. More specific, when habits are established (e.g., frequent cycling to the university), the very activation of the goal to act (e.g., havi...

After practice, performance was also no longer influenced by manipulations of att...
